Greg Woolliscroft’s N Scale City

Today we showcase the fine work of N Scale Limited user, Greg Woolliscroft.

If you have not noticed, Greg is a is a frequent commenter on our site.  He has always been eager to hand out endless praise for our work.  So we at N Scale Limited would like to thank him by sharing with you his jaw dropping work.

Like most modelers, Greg has what looks to be a very limited layout space. So, like many prototype cities, he utilized the available area and went vertical.  His tallest building, the National Bank Tower, has a whopping 84 floors and stands at an intimidating six feet tall.  He has built all of structures from balsa wood and the scene that you see took him four years to build.

As impressive as his city looks during the day, it goes to an even higher level when the lights go off.  He has lit all of his buildings and N scale skyscrapers, added street lights from CR signals and topped it off with neon signs from Miller Engineering.

With permission, we have added videos that Greg took of his city during the day and at night for your enjoyment.

    Greg,
You are more then welcome. Just a little something for all the support you have given us.

  • Jim Boyer

Having seen some of Greg’s work before, I was already a fan. Watching the videos, I am even more impressed. Beautiful work Greg.

    Greg,

Your work is beautiful. All the of buildings really look nice. It is amazing not only that they look so accurate, but the fact that a 72″ tall building doesn’t lean to left or right is amazing in itself. You demonstrate some incredible skill as a modeler and you should be proud of what you have accomplished here.

  • Greg Woolliscroft

Thanks guys for these compliments, I really appreciate it……Hutch….interesting that you notice that my buildings don’t ‘lean’. It’s something I am VERY meticulous about….or maybe paranoid is the appropriate word….HA….the ‘plumblines’ of the buildings is really important, I would rather scrap the building than have it ‘out’ by a few millimetres, so yes, I am quite proud that they stand so straight………..Thanks again……

  • Bob

    Greg,

I am so thankful I finally saw your videos!!! Just awesome my friend! I would love to see what you could accomplish with more room! :D

Again your models and skills are just fantastic! Cheers and I’m hoping to see your newest model you’ve just created!!!

    All the best,
    Bob

  • Greg Woolliscroft

Thanks Bob…I’m really glad you finaly saw the vids….I was quite pleased with the way they turned out, and the traffic sounds are perfect…..HA…..
I’l photograph my new Hotel building and Flickr it at the weekend….It’s looking good……in fact I think its better than my last one, the Court House…………What are you working on? you haven’t mentioned anything for a while, or is it all work at the minute?…..Tim is also quiet……

  • Tim Purcell

  • Greg Woolliscroft

Thank you to everyone who is kind enough to pay compliments to my city…..I do appreciate it….I am working towards completing my EL at the moment which I got from Imaginethatlaserart…..it’s looking good…I bought 11 sections, which is 55”……….but once I’ve completed my new city block and then my Baden-Baden train station I’ll be adding a further 6 sections…I really think this will give my city much more depth and purpose…..thanks again everyone……

  • Daniel

I keep watching the night time video over and over again. That is absolutely amazing! Truly impressive work. And very, very inspiring!

  • Greg Woolliscroft

thanks Daniel I really appreciate it….I’m going to post another video soon, as there are a few additions since then….

  • Mike

    Okay… That’s it…. I’m giving up even trying….

Anything I can hope to achieve in my lifetime pales (to the power of N where “N’ is a very large number) by comparison.

That sounds a lot more impressive than my son’s suggestion of “Awesome, simply awesome”, doesn’t it? But while we may use different terms, we agree in principle and anyone who can get a father to agree with he teenaged son (evenb jsut in principle} on anything deserves credit.

  • Greg Woolliscroft

I don’t have any chidren, or nephews either, (well I do..but he’s 25)…..If I did have a son or a nephew who took an interest in my hobby I’d be SOOOO blown away…..it can’t get any better than that can it?…………

  • Greg Woolliscroft

Oh…and whilst I am here…THANK YOU to Chris and Frank for allowing my humble effort to remain on this site for people to view….really, I feel truly honoured…thank you………………Greg

  • Greg Woolliscroft

I'm now planning a skeletal structure with cranes to give the feeling to the cityscape that the skyline is growing and changing….I'd appreciate any suggestions for pictures I could use whilst I research this before going ahead….hoping it will top around 30 storeys max….

Wow…I can't believe I missed this article! I've seen Greg's work before and its one of my inspirations! Great work!

  • Connecticut Dave

Greg, this is amazing work you have done.
Would you be interested in plans for a 143' tall hotel, 11 stories + pitched roof? At N scale the dimensions would be x(width)= 10″, y(depth)=12″ and z(height) = 10.75″. It can easily be altered for space as needed.

    Helpful hint for all:
Also, in you night time video I see that you have the Citgo sign from Miller. I have that plus another sign from them and noticed that they only require 3 volts and yet come with battery power supply with 3 slots (3 AA=4.5v). I had some problems with the signs not working correctly and tried this: I attached a wire from positive to negative in the place of one battery so that now only 2 batteries power the sign. All the different light sequences now work. Just a thought.

  • gregwoolliscroft

Thanks, and yes I'd be very interested in the hotel you mention…..let me know more info please….

  • Connecticut Dave

The hotel is a restored old brick building and I have a couple of pictures (need to take more) and all 4 elevations which I can put onto a pdf at scale. Meaning when you print them it will be like an N scale template or stencil of the building with scaled dimensions.

Question for moderators: Who do I send the files to for posting on this forum?

  • http://www.nscalelimited.com/ Frank Giacobbe

Dave, You can send files to me. Frank@nscalelimited.com. One question though — are these copyrighted plans, in the public domain or did you create them?

  • Connecticut Dave

Frank, I created them. They are elevations of an existing building. Not copyrighted blueprints from original architects. What I made are cad drawings and they didn’t have computers when this building was designed. Will get some more photos and set up pdfs to send you over the weekend.

I understand the concern for protection.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Sounds good! Thanks. I’ll be away this weekend, but we’ll get them up as quickly as possible.
