GG1: An American Classic
A 1983 NJ Transit documentary detailing the legendary Pennsylvania Railroad GG1, featuring the tuscan red GG1 with road number 4877 known as “Big Red”.
The film starts with the forward:
“Nearly a billion miles ago, in a time between the Global Wars, the force of the electron first set into motion a noble group of transporters
They raced along guideways that united the great centers of the Western World. Each could ferry more than a thousand people at a time with speed and sureness.
With their modern style, they unified the present and the future. Triumphant over space and time each of this celebrated class of cruisers was called: GG1: An American Classic.”
Included are many interior and exterior views of the GG1, including engine changes at South Amboy, NJ and shots of GG1s rolling past New York City.

SIGH! I may end up gettin gone of the new kato’s just because. No electric lines down south to model – except New Orleans’ trolleys – but there’s just something about that nose . . . .
I don’t blame you Phillip. The GG1 is gorgeous. I got the Kato GG1 and Broadway Limited 10-car set as soon as it came out.
What can I say, JUST GREAT! You guys just continue to out do yourselves. I watched this video with tears in my eyes. What has become of “Big Red”?

Interestingly enough, the Summer 2009 issue of Classic Trains magazine (http://www.trains.com/ctr/default.aspx) features the GG1.
According to their their series of GG1 articles, 4877 is currently owned by the United Railroad Historical Society (http://www.urhs.org/other_pages/prr4877.html) in Lebanon, NJ and is being restored to its original 5-stripe Brunswick Green livery with Clarendon lettering.
If you’re interested, they have an article in that issue that specifically details the early 1980s restoration of 4877.
