On Location: Philadelphia

Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, was the final city stop for Chris Brimley and I as we visited locations that we believed to be of interest to other N scale modelers.  After a long week of car rides and hectic days, we divided our tour of Philadelphia into two separate days to take it a little slower.

Philadelphia

Over that two day period, we visited Center City, Philadelphia, home to the Wanamaker building, Philadelphia City Hall, Love Park, Reading Terminal and the former location of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broad Street Station. We also visited Olde City and Society Hill, including stops such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the Philadelphia Borse.

While the historic sections of Philadelphia are interesting and offer their own appeal, Chris and I both agreed that Center City, with it’s some of its high-rise architecture from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, was much more of what we were looking to see.  Here are some photos from this location:

Well, I would say that it would be Frank, he had two while we were there and I had one. I had to stick with provolone, I couldn’t bring myself to have it with cheese whiz though. I am angry that I missed out on pizza at Lorenzo’s on South Street, the place that never closes was closed for a STAFF MEETING!

I loved Philly along with everything I saw in the East, I envy all of you that live there. Something that amazed me (other than Jug Handles in NJ) was the vast amount of great architecture, and it was everywhere. We have pockets of amazing architecture in the west but not to the extent of the east. I know why that is but it still surprised me.

It depends what you mean by cheese steak contest. Most people around here, when asking that, are referring to Pat’s vs. Gino’s Steaks.

Although, some may be disappointed by this… we had cheese streaks at Reading Terminal and I had a second one on 3rd and South. So no Gino’s OR Pat’s on this trip. :)

I was shocked that Lorenzo’s was closed. All I did was talk that up to Chris.

And…thanks for the great Philadelphia ideas and links you supplied. While it might be a while until Chris can use them, I’m only about 15 minutes away from Center City, so I’ll take advantage of them!

BTW, W. Reed, where do you live now? Still in Philadelphia?

  • W. Reed

Chris and Frank: As long as you both had a good time, that is all that matters. I really do not talk up Pat’s or Gino’s as for me at least it is more touristy and a good cheeststeak can be had basically anywhere in Philly.

Your “On Location” series has gotten me now realizing how great stuff is here where I am, even though no skyscrapers or tall building, there are some unique building out here.

Frank: I am now living in Carle Place out on Long Island. It is about 20 mins from NYC, but I still have a lot of great building out here in neighboring towns, including some PRR/LIRR towers and buildings that are still standing.

BTW Frank, did you treat Chris to a Philly Soft Pretzel?

  • Frank Giacobbe

Agreed on the cheese steak. I actually like the steaks in southern NJ better.

Glad this series of articles was meaningful for you. They were fun to do.

And…finally, no, we didn’t do soft pretzels. I didn’t think about them until I started putting together the feature graphic for the homepage (where I added the Tastykake photo). Oh well…maybe next time.
