On Location: Syracuse, New York

This month, Chris Brimley and I ventured on yet another road trip. Actually, for Chris, it was a plane trip, but who’s counting?

This time, we met at the home of a fellow N scale modeler, Don Dennis outside of Syracuse, New York. Most of you know him as DonD on the N Scale Limited Forum. Also, joining our group was our forum moderator, Jimmi Boyer (Jimmi on the forum), who drove up from Lebanon, PA to spend the weekend.

Our trip was a mix of sight seeing, layout tours, stops at local hobby stores, a train museum and assisting Don with his sprawling layout. I will say, we’re a little jealous of Don’s layout room and work area. They’re spacious, well built and honestly, the type of space that I really get lost working in for days at a time. Actually, I suppose we sort of did that because we spend many nights working until 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning before going to bed!

I won’t go into the specifics of projects that we worked on, but some of the highlights were:

  • Scratch built elavated line supports
  • Scratch built el station
  • Kitbashed/scratch built plate girder bridge
  • Painted brass truss bridge
  • River cut in
  • Tons of new track

For more about the modeling projects, join the forum discussion on this topic.

But, staying true to the N Scale Limited: On Location series, for this article, we’ll primarily focus on the architectural and prototype railroad sights. We’ll save the N scale modeling for the forum or another article.
