N Scale Animation
We all strive for the highest level of detail and realism on our model railroad layouts, which includes movement, or what’s known as “animation”. For many modelers through, the only layout movement is from the trains themselves. But there’s a whole other world of possibilities. Unfortunately, it’s usually the larger scales like HO or O that typically use animation.
Animation can be physical movement, like a spinning sign, but it can also be visual movement, like the lights on a movie marque.
Some of you may have already come across the following examples, but are worth sharing. This N scale work is not only well done, but it’s inspirational and maybe it will spark some new ideas for adding animation to your own layout.
These example videos were created by David K. Smith. Most of these animations are detailed in step-by-step articles on the White River and Northern site.

You can also get additional ideas on N scale animation from the Model Railroader book, Realistic Animation, Lighting & Sound : 21 Projects for Your Model Railroad, which is primarily written for HO scale, but includes some great information that can adapted to N scale. It’s especially useful for lighting techniques.
